Does resveratrol help you live longer or healthier?
Small trials hint at modest gains for blood pressure, bone density and some memory tests. No human trial we read measured lifespan.
Published October 2026
Short answer
Early, limited evidence: possible modest gains for blood pressure in type 2 diabetes and for bone density, but no human lifespan data. Evidence grade C (Limited). Several small RCTs and meta-analyses with mixed results; downgraded for inconsistency and for surrogate outcomes such as blood pressure and bone density.
Key takeaways
- In a 2022 review of 19 trials in people with type 2 diabetes, doses of 1,000 mg or more lowered blood pressure by about 8 mmHg at the top number [1].
- Across all trials pooled, blood pressure did not change clearly, so any benefit seems limited to some people and doses [2].
- A 2018 review of four trials found no clear effect on memory, with only small changes in mood scores [3].
- Bone density rose slightly in postmenopausal women after 12 months of 75 mg twice daily, but fractures were not counted [4].
- A 2-year trial was stopped early at month 5 because LDL cholesterol rose on high-dose resveratrol, so high doses are a warning sign [5].
The short version
Resveratrol is a plant compound found in grapes, berries and peanuts [6]. Its clearest signal is modest: lower blood pressure in people with type 2 diabetes [1], and slightly higher bone density in postmenopausal women [4]. The trials are small and mixed [7], and none of the human trials we read measured how long people live.
What the resveratrol studies show
Blood pressure: a 2022 review of 19 trials in people with type 2 diabetes found that doses of 1,000 mg or more lowered systolic blood pressure by about 8 mmHg and diastolic by about 3.5 mmHg [1]. A 2026 umbrella review of meta-analyses also rated the blood pressure effect in type 2 diabetes as high certainty [8]. Across all trials, the picture is less clear: a 2019 review of 17 trials found no overall change, with effects seen only at doses of 300 mg a day or more and in people with diabetes [2]. A 2026 review of 40 trials in people with obesity-related conditions reported modest drops in blood pressure [6].
Blood sugar: results conflict. A Cochrane review found only three small trials, with 50 people in total, and no effect on HbA1c or fasting glucose [7]. A 2026 umbrella review also found no significant effect on glucose markers [9]. A 2022 review of 30 studies reported lower HbA1c, a blood-sugar measure, and lower insulin resistance [10].
Bone density: in a 24-month trial of 75 mg twice daily in postmenopausal women, bone mineral density rose slightly in the lower spine and neck of the thigh bone after 12 months [4]. Bone density is a measure of bone strength, not a count of fractures.
Memory and thinking: a 2018 meta-analysis of four trials (226 people) found no effect on memory or thinking tests, though two mood measures improved [3]. A separate 2018 review of ten studies found a small gain on one memory test and mixed results overall [11]. In a 26-week trial of 60 older adults, verbal memory did not improve significantly [12]. A 24-month trial in 125 postmenopausal women reported a small improvement in overall thinking scores [13].
Blood vessels: a 6-week trial in 30 older adults with impaired glucose control found better artery function, with no change in blood sugar, blood pressure or lipids [14].
Longevity: resveratrol has been reported to extend lifespan in animal models [14]. The one human trial that tracked a biological-age marker did not find a clear change, and its resveratrol arm was stopped early [5].
The nuances
Doses vary widely. Trials used between 10 mg and 1,000 mg a day in the diabetes reviews [7], and an older study used 2 to 3 g a day [14].
High doses carry signals of harm. In the 2-year trial, the resveratrol arm was stopped at month 5 because LDL cholesterol rose [5]. In a 90-day pilot, 1,000 mg a day raised two blood markers linked to vessel inflammation and clotting more than placebo or 300 mg [15].
Side effects were the common ones. In a 52-week Alzheimer's trial of up to 2,000 mg a day, nausea, diarrhoea and weight loss were the most common side effects, and brain volume loss increased compared with placebo, though the authors called the drug safe and well tolerated [16]. An exercise-plus-resveratrol pilot found adverse events similar across groups [17].
Some trials had supplier ties. One cognition pilot's author consulted for the company that supplied the pills [18], and the biological-age trial received donated products from supplement companies [5].
What this means for you
The studies do not show that resveratrol makes people live longer, and the benefits seen so far are small [7]. The research is too thin to judge the right dose or the safety of long-term use [7]. If you are considering a supplement, talk to a doctor first, especially if you have diabetes, take prescription medicines, or are pregnant.
