Does Drinking Pomegranate Juice Lower Blood Pressure?
Pooled trials link daily pomegranate juice with a modest blood pressure drop. Here is what the studies found, and their limits.
Published October 2026
Short answer
Limited evidence suggests pomegranate juice may lower systolic and diastolic blood pressure modestly, but trials are small, varied, and short. Evidence grade C (Limited). Three meta-analyses of randomised trials found lower blood pressure; downgraded for high heterogeneity and because blood pressure is a surrogate marker.
Key takeaways
- Pooled trials link pomegranate juice with systolic pressure about 5 to 8 mmHg lower and diastolic about 2 to 3 mmHg lower [1][2].
- The systolic drop looks larger in people starting above 130 mmHg [1].
- Trials typically used 200 to 500 mL of juice daily for 1 to 8 weeks [3][4].
- Evidence is limited: results varied widely between trials and blood pressure is a marker, not a heart outcome [1][5].
The short version
Drinking Pomegranate Juice may lower blood pressure a little, but the evidence is still limited [1][2]. Across pooled trials, systolic pressure fell by about 5 to 8 mmHg and diastolic pressure by about 2 to 3 mmHg [1][6]. The trials were mostly short, results varied widely between studies, and blood pressure is a marker rather than a heart outcome such as heart attacks [1].
What the studies show
A 2024 review pooled 22 trials of pomegranate products and found systolic pressure about 7.9 mmHg lower and diastolic pressure about 3.2 mmHg lower with pomegranate than with control, with larger systolic drops in people starting above 130 mmHg [1]. A 2023 review of 14 juice trials (573 people) found systolic pressure about 5.0 mmHg lower with juice [2]. An earlier 2017 review of 8 juice trials found systolic pressure about 5.0 mmHg lower and diastolic pressure about 2.0 mmHg lower [6]. Individual trials point the same way: 200 mL of juice daily for 6 weeks lowered systolic and diastolic pressure versus control in 60 adults with type 2 diabetes [3], 500 mL daily for one week lowered both pressures versus placebo in a crossover trial of 30 adults with metabolic syndrome [4], and 330 mL daily for 4 weeks lowered systolic pressure by about 3.1 mmHg and diastolic by about 2.3 mmHg in 51 healthy adults [7]. In 44 women with PCOS, concentrated juice for 8 weeks lowered systolic pressure by about 10 mmHg versus about 1 mmHg with control [8].
The nuances
Results varied widely between trials, so the average drop may not match any one person [1]. An earlier 2017 review judged the evidence too limited to convincingly show a benefit, since only some of its trials found significant differences [5]. One review found the clearest systolic benefit in trials lasting 2 months or less and with 300 mL or less of juice daily, so the best dose and longer-term effects remain unclear [2]. Pomegranate juice did not consistently improve cholesterol: a 2025 review of 37 trials found only a small rise in HDL cholesterol (about 2.5 mg/dL) with no change in total, LDL cholesterol or triglycerides [9]. Short trials reported no adverse events [8][5], and 2 weeks of juice did not change blood levels of a drug handled by a common liver-enzyme pathway in 16 healthy volunteers [10]. Full safety details are on the Pomegranate Juice page.
What this means for you
Pomegranate juice is a fruit juice, not a treatment for high blood pressure, and the drop seen in trials is modest [1]. Anyone with high blood pressure, kidney disease or diabetes, or anyone taking blood pressure or cholesterol medicines, should talk to a doctor before drinking large amounts daily.
